IODP3 Expedition 502E sets sail!
The first IODP3 expedition for Chikyu, Expedition 502E, has begun!
Expedition 502E aims to test key hypotheses about the long-term hydrogeologic and mechanical evolution of the Japan Trench megathrust by recovering and redeploying temperature sensor strings that were installed in the Japan Trench subduction fault zone during IODP Expedition 405.
This redeployment will enable data to be collected from the downhole formation, providing five more years of continuous monitoring.
