Call for Applications – IODP3 Science Evaluation Panel Co-Chair (Site Subgroup)
Call for Applications - IODP3 Science Evaluation Panel Co-Chair (Site Subgroup)
The Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) is central to the success of IODP3 and is responsible for the evaluation and selection of the best and most relevant proposals to forward to the IODP3 Mission Specific Platform Facility Board (MSP-FB) for development of expedition schedules. SEP members are drawn from the international scientific ocean drilling communities in IODP3 Core and Associate Member nations. To evaluate the scientific and site characterisation aspects of drilling/coring proposals, SEP members are assigned to two subgroups, SEP-Science and SEP-Site, under the leadership of two Co-Chairs.
In this call, IODP3 is seeking applications from active leading scientists from all IODP3 member nations to become the next SEP Co-Chair and lead the SEP-Site Subgroup. Applicants should have experience in a research field relevant to the geophysical characterisation of potential drill sites, but we particularly seek experts in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of marine seismic reflection data. Applications from women scientists are especially welcome.
The role of the SEP-Site Co-Chair requires substantial dedicated time. The successful candidate is expected to co-lead and attend two SEP meetings per year (usually held in March/April and September, with one meeting in-person and one entirely virtual). They are also required to attend meetings of the MSP-FB (usually held once per year in May/June), and may also contribute to the annual Scientific Drilling Forum (by either in-person or virtual attendance).
The appointee will be expected to become the incoming SEP-Site Co-Chair on 1 February 2026 to shadow the current Co-Chair, Prof Tim Reston, at his final SEP meeting (in Japan) in early April 2026 and final MSP-FB meeting (in an ECORD nation) in June 2026. They will then serve as the new SEP-Site Co-Chair for a three-year term (six SEP meetings) starting in late June 2026.
Applications from scientists based in IODP3 Member nations must be submitted to the IODP3 Science Office by the deadline of 23:59 GMT on Wednesday 17 December 2025 using the IODP3 Gateway system, accessed via the Apply to Participate link on the IODP3 website. Information on the content required in applications to this call is available in the IODP3 Guide for Applicants.
