Japanese deep-sea drilling research recognised by Guiness World Records!

The total drill pipe length of 7,906 m achieved by Deep-Sea Scientific Drilling Vessel “Chikyu” has been certified by Guiness World Records as the “deepest scientific ocean drilling”.
The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) (President: Hiroyuki Yamato) (hereinafter referred to as “JAMSTEC”) and Mantle Quest Japan Company Ltd. (President & Representative Director: Hiroyasu Ishiguro) has been awarded the Guinness World Records certification for the “Deepest scientific ocean drilling” with a total drill pipe length of 7,906 meters accomplished aboard Deep-Sea Scientific Drilling vessel “Chikyu”. This certifies that IODP (International Ocean Discovery Program)*1 Expedition 405 (Tracking Tsunamigenic Slip Across the Japan Trench: JTRACK) achieved a total drill pipe length of 7,906 meters during its simultaneous Logging While Drilling (LWD)*2 operations, establishing the world record for the “deepest scientific ocean drilling” (previously reported on 20 December 2024).
This record demonstrates the high technical capabilities achieved through the collaboration between JAMSTEC and Japan Mantle Quest Ltd., which operates “D/V Chikyu”. We are pleased to announce that this achievement has been recognized today by Guinness World Records, and the related certificate was awarded on 24 September 2025.
