Call for Applications – IODP3 SEP Members – Magellan3 Steering Committee – IODP3 MSP-FB Science Board
We have three opportunities open now to be part of our IODP3 Science Community. Our panels, boards and steering committees are integral to the success of IODP3 and we welcome applications to the three calls detailed below.
Call for Applications - IODP3 Science Evaluation Panel Members
The Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) is responsible for the evaluation and selection of the best and most relevant proposals to forward to the IODP3 MSP Facility Board for development of expedition schedules. SEP members are drawn from the international scientific ocean drilling communities in IODP3 Core and Associate Member nations.
In this call, IODP3 is seeking applications from active leading scientists in the fields of marine geology and geophysics from our Core Member nations (i.e., the 15 ECORD nations and Japan) to join either the SEP-Science or SEP-Site Subgroups.
The call is open to scientists with experience in all relevant research fields, but we particularly seek experts in biogeoscience, sedimentology, low-temperature geochemistry and paleoceanography for SEP-Science membership, and in the interpretation of marine seismic reflection data for SEP-Site membership. Applications for membership of both SEP subgroups from Japanese scientists are also encouraged, to redress current under-representation of Japan.
Call for Applications - Magellan3 Science Steering Committee
The Magellan3 Workshop Series Programme (MG3), organised jointly with the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), supports scientists from IODP3 member nations in developing new and innovative IODP3 offshore drilling/coring and SPARC proposals to meet future challenges in Earth, life and environmental sciences. MG3 funds or co-funds workshops leading to proposals that address the ambitions of the 2050 Science Framework (and/or the ICDP Science Plan 2020-2030), and also provides travel grants to attend funded workshops. The MG3 Workshop Series Programme is coordinated by a Science Steering Committee (MG3-SSC) consisting of leading Earth scientists.
In this call, IODP3 is seeking applications from active leading scientists from any of our Core and Associate Member nations with expertise in any discipline related to the ambitions of the 2050 Science Framework.
Call for Applications - IODP3 MSP Facility Board: Science Board
The MSP Facility Board (MSP-FB) fulfils the critical function of making decisions on the most effective use of resources to plan the schedule of IODP3 expeditions for successive years of operations.
Within the MSP-FB, the Science Board plays a key role in decision-making and consists of leading scientists drawn from the international scientific ocean drilling communities. The composition of the MSP-FB Science Board is:
• the two MSP-FB Co-Chairs (one from ECORD and one from Japan)
• six members from ECORD and Japan as IODP3 Core Members
• up to four members from IODP3 Associate Members
In this call, IODP3 is seeking applications from active leading scientists from our Core and Associate Member nations to join the MSP-FB Science Board for a three-year term. The call is open to scientists with experience in all research fields relevant to scientific ocean drilling science. The MSP-FB convenes once annually in person to execute its mandate, but additional virtual meetings may be organised as appropriate. In-person meetings will alternate between venues in ECORD member countries and Japan.
How to apply
For more information on all three calls please read the full calls available above. You can also read the SEP terms of reference here ; the Magellan3 Workshop Series terms of reference here; and the MSP Facility Board terms of reference here.
Applications for ALL three calls are welcomed from scientists based in IODP3 Core and Associate Member nations and these must be submitted by Friday 31 January 2025 using the IODP3 Gateway system, accessed via Apply to Participate on the IODP3 webpage.
The IODP3 Gateway is currently in the final stages of development and is not currently active. It will be ready in late December 2024 and its opening will be announced on the IODP3 website homepage. Application materials may therefore be prepared in readiness for submission once the system becomes active using our Guide for Applicants.
