Exciting News: The IODP³ Gateway is Now Open for Proposal Submissions!

We are pleased to announce that the IODP³ Gateway is now open for all types of proposal submissions.

You can access the proposal submission system via the Submit a Proposal button on the IODP³ website or directly at the IODP³ Gateway.

New & Improved Submission Process

To assist proponents, we have updated the Submission Guidelines for Scientific Ocean Drilling Proposals. These now include:

• Step-by-step instructions for creating a Gateway account and submitting proposals.
• A revised structure that fully aligns with the webform-based functionality of the Gateway system.
• A streamlined process for providing site operational and safety details —replacing the previous Site Forms 1–5 with a single webform containing a matrix of required site information.
• A new Site Analysis tool, that plots proposed site locations on an interactive map, helping to verify site positions and flagging whether sites are within Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) or Marine Parks.

Both the Scientific Ocean Drilling Proposals and SPARC (Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives) Submission Guidelines include illustrated screenshots of the new webforms to enhance transparency.

Proposal Submission & Deadlines

Proposals may be submitted at any time, but evaluation by the Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) begins after these annual deadlines:

• SPARC Proposals: January 31 (extended to March 3 in 2025)
• Scientific Ocean Drilling Proposals (Preliminary, Full, and Addenda): January 31 (extended to March 3 in 2025) and July 1
• IODP³/ICDP Land-to-Sea (L2S) Proposals:
  • Preliminary Proposals: January 15 (submitted to ICDP, copied to IODP³)
  • Workshop Proposals: No deadline (submitted to ICDP, copied to IODP³)
  • Full Proposals: July 1 (submitted to IODP³)

Proposals received after a deadline will be reviewed in the next evaluation cycle.

Please note that the IODP³ Gateway system for submitting Site Survey Data in support of Full drilling/coring proposals is currently under development and will be launched as soon as possible. An announcement will be posted on the IODP³ website once the Site Survey Data submission system is ready for use.
