Special Call to Participate: Expedition 507: Late Cenozoic Glaciers, Landscapes, Climates, and Ecosystems of the North Sea
Special Call to Participate in IODP3 Expedition 507: Late Cenozoic Glaciers, Landscapes, Climates, and Ecosystems of the North Sea now open!
International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3) Expedition GLACE-NS aims to investigate the North Sea Basin late Plio-Pleistocene succession and the environmental-ecological information it contains. This will help elucidate how glaciers, landscapes, climates, and shallow marine and coastal ecosystems evolved through a period of high-amplitude climate variability. The current North Sea has warmed at twice the global average and, therefore, has a non-linear response to climate forcing that needs quantification. The regional climatic state cascades into nutrient cycling, ecosystem evolution, sediment transport, and carbon cycling in the North Sea and requires a greater knowledge on how these systems evolved through time periods of variable baseline characteristics (i.e. orbital parameters, ice sheets, climate, tipping points). This will improve knowledge on the fundamental mechanisms governing these processes, with strong relevance to contemporary and future change.
In this Special Call scientists from ECORD countries are invited to apply to join the Expedition Science Team for IODP3 Expedition 507. Scientists from the UK, France, Germany and Norway are particularly encouraged to apply. Scientists are specifically sought with expertise in a) macrofossil and malacology; b) glacial sedimentology; and c) optically stimulated luminescence.
For more information please read the full call in the PDF below. The Expedition Outline can also be found via the link below, and on the Expedition 507 Expedition Page
Applications from scientists based in ECORD member nations must be submitted by 23:59 GMT on Thursday 30 July 2026 using the IODP3 Gateway system. The Gateway can be accessed via Apply to Participate on the IODP3 webpage, and more information on the content required for applications to this call is also available in the IODP3 Guide for Applicants.
A webinar was held on Monday 20 October 2025 at 9am (BST) to enable the community to find out more about Expedition 507. A recording of this webinar can be found below, closed captions are available, and can be toggled on and off using the CC button beneath the video (please note these captions are auto-generated).
Any questions about the application process please contact applications@iodp3.org
