Special Call to Participate: Expedition 503: Hadal Trench Tsunamigenic Slip History
Special Call to Participate in IODP3 Expedition 503: Hadal Trench Tsunamigenic Slip History now open!
Expedition 503 plans to drill a trench basin in the central Japan Trench to recover the whole trench-fill sequence for dating and establishing event-stratigraphy for paleoseismologic interpretations and further investigations of earthquake related element cycles in a hadal trench environment. Combining stratigraphy and chronology of thick event deposits, interstitial-water geochemistry proxy-data for past fluid flow pulses and core-to-seismic correlation to paleo-slip-to-trench events, this expedition will clarify how often the slip-to-trench events have occurred.
This Special Call is seeking a scientist with expertise in Organic Geochemistry to join the off-shore science team. We are specifically looking for a scientist who is able to carry out high frequency interstitial water sampling on core samples, as well as contribute to the science objectives of the expedition. This call is only open to scientists based in Japan.
A webinar was held on Wednesday 8th January 2025 to enable the community to find out more about Expedition 503. A recording of this webinar can be found below, closed captions are available, and can be toggled on and off using the CC button beneath the video.
Applications from scientists based in Japan, must be submitted directly to the J-DESC Support Office using the Word application form below.
Once completed the form should be emailed, with a PDF of your two-page CV, and three-page Full Scientific Statement of Interest, to jdesc@jamstec.go.jp by Friday 16 May 2025.
Support in filling out the application form can be found in our Guide for Applicants.
